Airbus’ A330/A340
Family of aircraft has
established market leadership in the 240-380 seat category.
Five twin or four-engine aircraft, offering maximum commonality
and including the new A340-500 and –600 models,
offer the highest degree of operational flexibility and
economy combined with unmatched passenger comfort.
The
twin-engine A330 combines some of the lowest operating costs
of any aircraft ever designed with maximum flexibility for
a wide range of route structures. The A330-300, which first
entered service in early 1994, typically seats 335 passengers
in two classes or 295 passengers in three classes and can
fly up to 5,600 nm/10,400 km. It was joined in 1998 by the
A330-200, which offers long range capability of up to 6,650
nm/12,300 km with ETOPS capability on the routes for which
it was designed and seats 253 passengers in three classes.
The twin-engine A330 is available with General Electric’s
CF6-80E1, Pratt & Whitney’s PW4000 or Rolls-Royce’s
Trent 700.
Featuring
the quietest cabin in the sky, the A340 enables airlines
to develop more non-stop ultra-long haul services, unrestricted
by ETOPS for routes over extreme and remote terrain. The
A340-300, which carries 295 passengers up to 13,900km/7,500nm,
is currently operated by dozens of airlines around the world.
The larger of the two additional versions launched in December
1997, the A340-600, enters service in July 2002. The A340-600
will carry 380 passengers up to 14,150km/7,650nm. The ultra-long
range, 313 seat, A340-500 has a range of up to 16,000km/
8,650nm. The four-engine A340-300 is offered with a new version
of the CFM International CFM56-5C engine. The A340-500/-600
are powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 500 series.
With
the introduction of the A340-500 and –600, the A340-300
is set to receive additional improvements flowing across
from these new aircraft. A new cabin interior, new systems
and further reductions in airframe maintenance cost are complemented
by a new version of the CFM56-5C engine designed to lower
the cost of operation while improving fuel efficiency and
matching the tough noise and emissions standards demanded
by airport authorities. With a further 200nm (370km) boost
in available range capability, the A340-300 Enhanced joins
the –500 and –600 to form the long-range family
of the 21st century.
